Hello back,

Thaks for the feedback to my previous posting !
Being in struggle to take the best decision for our studio's
(polyvalent) drumset, I would need an opinion on which
of these two models should I prefer:

Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute AYN-OT-4
or
Pearl MMX

Thnx

Hello all cool drumres,
Not being a drumer, I have a question.
I and a friend build a high quality home studio.
We need to put good drums in it for polyvalent use.
(Drums only, not cymbals - drummers bring their own.)
A shop made us a proposition ...

Yamaha hands down over Pearl. Pearl quality is not even close to Yamaha.
I've owned a few Pearl drums and have had issues with all of them. Their
pedals are very good, but I can't comment on their durability since I have
only limited gigging on them.

Tony, I got a Pearl Masters Studio in 2001. The Masters would be comparable
to the Absolute. On the Pearls I really saw (and still see) no place where
the quality could have been improved. The 5 drums were flawless, inside and
out. Exterior finish, edges, interior finish ,shell construction,
roundness, chroming, and hardware mounting were all perfect. However, I've
never owned a Yamaha drum to compare. I don't know, maybe I got lucky.

Now if we're talking sound that's whole other personal opinion issue.

I've owned 2 Ferrone snares and they were shit for quality. Both snare
butts stripped out, and 3-4 tension rods were bent on both drums. And the
latter was a drum hand picked by Gene O straight from the factory! Now, I
loved the sound and look of the drum, but from that experience I will never
own a Pearl drum again. Every Yamaha drum I have owned has been flawless
also and the hardware design on them is second to none, Sonor included.

I wouldn't have tolerated that for a second either. I don't blame you at
all. I knew from other people that it happens.

I'm on the other side of the fence - I have a set of MCA's and the
only Pearls I've ever owned were Exports. I love my MCA's - better
sounding than my DW's and just as fine a fit'n'finish as my Sonors.
I'd choose the MCA's... but I've heard from other drummers that the
Pearls sound like "drums are supposed to sound".
